Proporcionamos ejercicios sobre la Ley de inercia de Sylvester.
- Se considera la forma cuadrática $q:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}$ cuya expresión en la base canónica $B$ de $\mathbb{R}^3$ es: $$q(x)=x_1^2+5x_2^2+8x_3^2+4x_1x_2-6x_1x_3-8x_2x_3.$$ Determinar una base de $\mathbb{R}^3$ respecto de la cual la matriz de $q$ sea diagonal con a lo sumo unos, menos unos y ceros en la diagonal principal.
- Determinar la signatura de la forma cuadrática del ejercicio anterior.
Enunciado
- La expresión matricial de $q$ por medio de una matriz simétrica es: $$q(x)=\begin{pmatrix}x_1,\;x_2,\;x_3\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}1 & 2 & -3 \\
2 & 5 & -4 \\
-3 & -4 & 8
\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}x_1\\{x_2}\\x_3\end{pmatrix}.$$ Aplicando el método de las transformaciones elementales por filas y columnas: $$\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc}
1 & 2 & -3 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\
2 & 5 & -4 & 0 & 1 & 0 \\
-3 & -4 & 8 & 0 & 0 & 1
\end{array}\right]\begin{matrix}{F_2-2F_1}\\{F_3+3F_1}\end{matrix}\sim
\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc}
1 & 2 & -3 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\
0 & 1 & 2 & -2 & 1 & 0 \\
0 & 2 & -1 & 3 & 0 & 1
\end{array}\right]$$ $$\begin{matrix}{C_2-2C_1}\\{C_3+3C_1}\end{matrix}\sim
\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc}
1 & 0 & 0 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\
0 & 1 & 2 & -2 & 1 & 0 \\
0 & 2 & -1 & 3 & 0 & 1
\end{array}\right]\begin{matrix}{F_3-2F_2}\end{matrix}\sim $$ $$\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc}
1 & 0 & 0 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\
0 & 1 & 2 & -2 & 1 & 0 \\
0 & 0 & -5 & 7 & -2 & 1
\end{array}\right]\begin{matrix}{C_3-2C_2}\end{matrix}\sim$$ $$
\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc}
1 & 0 & 0 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\
0 & 1 & 0 & -2 & 1 & 0 \\
0 & 0 & -5 & 7 & -2 & 1
\end{array}\right]\begin{matrix}\frac{1}{\sqrt{5}}{F_3}\end{matrix}\sim$$ $$\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc}
1 & 0 & 0 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\
0 & 1 & 0 & -2 & 1 & 0 \\
0 & 0 & -5/\sqrt{5} & 7/\sqrt{5} & -2 /\sqrt{5}& 1/\sqrt{5}
\end{array}\right]\begin{matrix}\frac{1}{\sqrt{5}}{C_3}\end{matrix}\sim$$ $$\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc}
1 & 0 & 0 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\
0 & 1 & 0 & -2 & 1 & 0 \\
0 & 0 & -1 & 7/\sqrt{5} & -2 /\sqrt{5}& 1/\sqrt{5}
\end{array}\right].$$ Es decir, una matriz diagonal $D$ que representa a la forma cuadrática y la traspuesta de la matriz $P$ del cambio de la base $B$ a la de vectores conjugados $B’$ son: $$D=\begin{bmatrix}1 & 0 & 0\\
0 & 1 & 0 \\
0 & 0 & -1\end{bmatrix},\quad P^T=\begin{bmatrix}1 & 0 & 0\\
-2 & 1 & 0 \\
7 /\sqrt{5}& -2/\sqrt{5} & 1/\sqrt{5}\end{bmatrix}.$$ La expresión de $q$ en coordenadas en la base $$B’=\left\{(1,0,0), (-2 , 1 , 0),( 7/\sqrt{5} , -2 /\sqrt{5}, 1/\sqrt{5})\right\}$$ es por tanto: $$q(x)=\begin{pmatrix}x_1′,\;x_2′,\;x_3’\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}1 & 0 & 0 \\
0 & 1 & 0 \\
0 & 0 & -1
\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}x_1’\\{x_2′}\\x_3’\end{pmatrix}=x_1’^2+x_2’^2-x_3’^2.$$ - Una matriz diagonal que representa a $q$ es $D=\text{diag }(1,1,-1)$ en consecuencia la signatura de $q$ es $(2,1).$
