Primera forma fundamental de una superficie

Definimos la primera forma fundamental de una superficie y estudiamos alguna de sus propiedades.

    Enunciado
    Sea $U$ un abierto de $\mathbb{R}^2$ y $S$ una superficie en $\mathbb{R}^3$ definida mediante $$\mathbf{x}:U\to \mathbb{R}^2,\quad \mathbf{x}=\mathbf{x}(u,v)=\left(x_1(u,v),\;x_2(u,v),\;x_3(u,v)\right)$$ con $\mathbf{x}\in C^1(U)$ y $$\text{rango }\begin{bmatrix}{\dfrac{\partial x_1}{\partial u}} & {\dfrac{\partial x_2}{\partial u}} & \dfrac{\partial x_3}{\partial u}\\{\dfrac{\partial x_1}{\partial v}} & {\dfrac{\partial x_2}{\partial v}} & \dfrac{\partial x_3}{\partial v}\end{bmatrix}=2\text{ para todo }(u,v)\in U.$$ Es decir, tenemos una representación paramétrica regular de $S$.
  1. Demostrar que la condición del rango $2$ puede ser sustituida de forma equivalente por $\mathbf{x}_u\times\mathbf{x}_v\ne \mathbf{0}$ para todo $(u,v)\in U$.
  2. Se define la primera forma fundamental de $S$ y se la representa por $\mathbf{I}$ como la forma cuadrática $\mathbf{I}=d\mathbf{x}\cdot d\mathbf{x}$. Expresar $\mathbf{I}$ en la forma: $$\mathbf{I}=(du,dv)\begin{pmatrix}{E}&{F}\\{F}&{G}\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}{du}\\{dv}\end{pmatrix}.$$
  3. Calcular la primera forma fundamental de la superficie $S\equiv\mathbf{x}(u,v)=(u,v,u^2-v^2).$ Particularizar para el punto de $S$ correspondiente a $(u,v)=(2,1)$ y clasificar la forma cuadrática resultante.
  4. Demostrar que la primera forma fundamental es siempre una forma cuadrática definida positiva.
  5. Justificar la validez de la fórmula $\mathbf{I}\approx \left|\Delta \mathbf{x}\right|^2$ para valores «pequeños» de $du$ y $dv$.
  6. Sean $u(t)$ y $v(t)$ dos funciones reales de clase $1$ en $[a,b]$ con $(u(t),v(t))\in U$ para todo $t\in[a,b]$. Consideremos la curva contenida en $S$ $$\gamma:\mathbf{x}=\mathbf{x}(u(t),v(t))\quad t\in[a,b].$$ Demostrar que la longitud de $\gamma$ es $$L=\int_a^b\sqrt{\mathbf{I}\left(\frac{du}{dt},\frac{dv}{dt}\right)}\;dt$$
  7. Determinar la longitud del arco de curva definida por $u=t$, $v=2t$ desde $t=0$ hasta $t=1$ y contenida en la superficie $S: (x,y,z)=(u+v,u-v,uv).$
  8. En el punto de $S$ correspondiente a $(u_0,v_0)\in U$ se consideran las curvas de $S$ dadas por $$\left \{ \begin{matrix} u=t\\v=v_0\end{matrix}\right.\quad \left \{ \begin{matrix} u=u_0\\v=t\end{matrix}\right.$$ a las cuales se las llama curvas coordenadas. Determinar el ángulo que forman tales curvas en función de los coeficientes de la primera forma fundamental.
    Solución
  1. En efecto, $$\text{rg }\begin{bmatrix}{\dfrac{\partial x_1}{\partial u}} & {\dfrac{\partial x_2}{\partial u}} & \dfrac{\partial x_3}{\partial u}\\{\dfrac{\partial x_1}{\partial v}} & {\dfrac{\partial x_2}{\partial v}} & \dfrac{\partial x_3}{\partial v}\end{bmatrix}=2\;\forall(u,v)\in U\Leftrightarrow \text{rg }\begin{bmatrix}{\mathbf{x}_u} \\{\mathbf{x}_v}\end{bmatrix}=2\;\forall(u,v)\in U$$ $$\Leftrightarrow\mathbf{x}_u\text{ y }\mathbf{x}_u\text{ lin. ind.}\;\forall(u,v)\in U\Leftrightarrow\mathbf{x}_u\times\mathbf{x}_v\ne \mathbf{0}\;\forall(u,v)\in U.$$
  2. Tenemos $d\mathbf{x}=\mathbf{x}_udu+\mathbf{x}_v dv$ por tanto $$\mathbf{I}=d\mathbf{x}\cdot d\mathbf{x}=\left(\mathbf{x}_udu+\mathbf{x}_v dv\right)\cdot \left(\mathbf{x}_udu+\mathbf{x}_v dv\right)$$ $$=\left(\mathbf{x}_u\cdot\mathbf{x}_u\right)du^2+2\left(\mathbf{x}_u\cdot\mathbf{x}_v\right)dudv+\left(\mathbf{x}_v\cdot\mathbf{x}_v\right)dv^2$$ $$=(du,dv)\begin{pmatrix}{\mathbf{x}_u\cdot\mathbf{x}_u}&{\mathbf{x}_u\cdot\mathbf{x}_v}\\{\mathbf{x}_u\cdot\mathbf{x}_v}&{\mathbf{x}_v\cdot\mathbf{x}_v}\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}{du}\\{dv}\end{pmatrix}=(du,dv)\begin{pmatrix}{E}&{F}\\{F}&{G}\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}{du}\\{dv}\end{pmatrix}.$$
  3. Tenemos $\mathbf{x}_u=(1,0,2u)$, $\mathbf{x}_v=(0,1,-2v)$. Claramente $\mathbf{x}$ es una representación paramétrica regular de $S$. Entonces, $$E=\mathbf{x}_u\cdot \mathbf{x}_u=1+4u^2,\; F=\mathbf{x}_u\cdot \mathbf{x}_v=-4uv,\;G=\mathbf{x}_v\cdot \mathbf{x}_v=1+4u^2,$$ $$\mathbf{I}=(du,dv)\begin{pmatrix}{1+4u^2}&{-4uv}\\{-4uv}&{1+4v^2}\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}{du}\\{dv}\end{pmatrix}$$ $$=(1+4u^2)du^2+(-8uv)dudv+(1+4u^2)dv^2.$$ Para $(u,v)=(2,1)$, $$\mathbf{I}=(du,dv)\begin{pmatrix}{17}&{-8}\\{-8}&{5}\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}{du}\\{dv}\end{pmatrix}=17du^2-16dudv+5dv^2.$$ Los menores principales son $17 > 0$ y $17\cdot 5-(-8)^2=21 > 0$, por tanto la forma cuadrática es definida positiva.
  4. Para todo $(du,dv)$, se verifica $\mathbf{I}=d\mathbf{x}\cdot d\mathbf{x}=\left|d\mathbf{x}\right|^2\ge 0$. Por otra parte, $$\mathbf{I}=0\Leftrightarrow \left|d\mathbf{x}\right|^2=0\Leftrightarrow \left|d\mathbf{x}\right|=0\Leftrightarrow \left|\mathbf{x}_udu+\mathbf{x}_v dv\right|=0$$ $$\Leftrightarrow \mathbf{x}_udu+\mathbf{x}_v dv=\mathbf{0}\underbrace{\Leftrightarrow}_{\mathbf{x}_u\text{ y }\mathbf{x}_u\text{ lin. ind.}}du=0 \text{ y }dv=0.$$ La forma cuadrática sólo se anula en $(du,dv)=(0,0)$. Concluimos que $\mathbf{I}$ es definida positiva.
  5. Usando que la diferencial aproxima al incremento de la función para «pequeños» incrementos de las variables (en éste caso $du$ y $dv$), $$d\mathbf{x}\approx \Delta \mathbf{x}\Rightarrow \mathbf{I}=d\mathbf{x}\cdot d\mathbf{x}\approx \Delta \mathbf{x}\cdot \Delta \mathbf{x}=\left|\Delta \mathbf{x}\right|^2.$$
  6. La curva $\gamma $ es de clase $1$ en $[a,b]$, en consecuencia su longitud $L$ es $$L=\int_a^b\left|\frac{d\mathbf{x}}{dt}\right|^2dt=\int_a^b\sqrt{\frac{d\mathbf{x}}{dt}\cdot \frac{d\mathbf{x}}{dt}}\;dt$$ $$=\int_a^b\sqrt{\left(\mathbf{x_u}\frac{du}{dt}+\mathbf{x_v}\frac{dv}{dt}\right)\cdot\left(\mathbf{x_u}\frac{du}{dt}+\mathbf{x_v}\frac{dv}{dt}\right)}\;dt$$ $$=\int_a^b\sqrt{E\left(\frac{du}{dt}\right)^2+2F\frac{du}{dt}\cdot \frac{dv}{dt}+G\left(\frac{dv}{dt}\right)^2}\;dt$$ $$=\int_a^b\sqrt{\mathbf{I}\left(\frac{du}{dt},\frac{dv}{dt}\right)}\;dt.$$
  7. Tenemos $\mathbf{x}_u=(1,1,v)$, $\mathbf{x}_v=(1,-1,u)$. Claramente $\mathbf{x}(u,v)$ es una representación paramétrica regular de $S$. Entonces, $$E=\mathbf{x}_u\cdot \mathbf{x}_u=2+v^2,\; F=\mathbf{x}_u\cdot \mathbf{x}_v=uv,\;G=\mathbf{x}_v\cdot \mathbf{x}_v=2+u^2$$ $$\Rightarrow\mathbf{I}\left(\frac{du}{dt},\frac{dv}{dt}\right)=(2+v^2)\left(\frac{du}{dt}\right)^2+2uv\frac{du}{dt}\cdot\frac{dv}{dt}+(2+u^2)\left(\frac{dv}{dt}\right)^2$$ $$=(2+4t^2)+(8t^2)+(2+t^2)\cdot 4=16t^2+10.$$ La longitud de $\gamma$ es por tanto $$L=\int_0^1\sqrt{16t^2+1}\;dt=\int_0^1\sqrt{16(t^2+1/16)}\;dt=4\int_0^1\sqrt{t^2+1/16}\;dt,$$ integral que fácilmente se resuelve aplicando la conocida fórmula $$\int\sqrt{t^2+a}\;dx=\frac{t}{2}\sqrt{t^2+a}+\frac{a}{2}\log \lvert t+\sqrt{t^2+a}\rvert+C.$$
  8. Los vectores de dirección de las curvas coordenadas son $\mathbf{x}_u$ y $\mathbf{x}_v$, por tanto si $\beta$ es el ángulo que forman tales curvas, $$\cos \beta=\frac{\mathbf{x}_u\cdot \mathbf{x}_v}{\left|\mathbf{x}_u\right|\left|\mathbf{x}_v\right|}=\frac{\mathbf{x}_u\cdot \mathbf{x}_v}{\sqrt{\mathbf{x}_u\cdot \mathbf{x}_u}\sqrt{\mathbf{x}_v\cdot \mathbf{x}_v}}=\frac{F}{\sqrt{EG}}.$$
