  1. Definición. Sea $\mathbf{r}$ un subconjunto de $\mathbb{Q}.$ Se dice que $\mathbf{r}$ es una cortadura de Dedekind si se verifican las condiciones $$\begin{aligned}
    & (D1)\quad \emptyset\ne \mathbf{r}\ne \mathbb{Q}.\\
& (D2)\quad p\in \mathbf{r}\;\wedge\; q\in \mathbb{Q}\;\wedge\;q < p\Rightarrow q\in \mathbf{r}.\\ & (D3)\quad \forall p\in \mathbf{r}\;\exists q\in \mathbf{r}: p < q.

  2. Observación. Nótese que si $\mathbf{r}$ es cortadura de Dedekind, entonces se verifica $p\in \mathbf{r}\;\wedge\; q\in \mathbb{Q}\setminus\mathbf{r}\Rightarrow p < q.$

  4. Notación. Si $q\in \mathbb{Q}$ es claro que $\mathbf{q^\ast}=\{x\in \mathbb{Q}: x < q\}$ es un cortadura de Dedekind y denotamos $\mathbb{Q}_{\mathbb{R}}$ al conjunto $\mathbb{Q}_{\mathbb{R}}=\{\mathbf{q^\ast}:q\in \mathbb{Q}\}.$

  5. Teorema.

            $(D2)$ Sea $p\in\mathbf{t}.$ Entonces, $p\in\mathbf{r}_1$ para alguna $\mathbf{r}_1\in A.$ Si $q < p,$ entonces $q\in \mathbf{r}_1,$ con lo cual $q\in\mathbf{t}.$
            $(D3)$ Sea $p\in\mathbf{t}$ y elijamos $r\in\mathbf{r}_1$ tal que $r > p.$ Como $\mathbf{r}_1\subset \mathbf{t},$ se verifica $r\in\mathbf{t}.$
